Embodied simulation as part of affective evaluation processes: Task dependence of valence concordant EMG activity.André Weinreich & Jakob Maria Funcke - 2014 - Cognition and Emotion 28 (4):728-736.
Drawing on recent findings, this study examines whether valence concordant electromyography (EMG) responses can be explained as an unconditional effect of mere stimulus processing or as somatosensory simulation driven by task-dependent processing strategies. While facial EMG over the Corrugator supercilii and the Zygomaticus major was measured, each participant performed two tasks with pictures of album covers. One task was an affective evaluation task and the other was to attribute the album covers to one of five decades. The Embodied Emotion Account (...)

Conformity Assessments and Post-market Monitoring: A Guide to the Role of Auditing in the Proposed European AI Regulation.Jakob Mökander, Maria Axente, Federico Casolari & Luciano Floridi - 2022 - Minds and Machines 32 (2):241-268.
The proposed European Artificial Intelligence Act (AIA) is the first attempt to elaborate a general legal framework for AI carried out by any major global economy. As such, the AIA is likely to become a point of reference in the larger discourse on how AI systems can (and should) be regulated. In this article, we describe and discuss the two primary enforcement mechanisms proposed in the AIA: the _conformity assessments_ that providers of high-risk AI systems are expected to conduct, and (...)

Ethics-based auditing of automated decision-making systems: intervention points and policy implications.Jakob Mökander & Maria Axente - 2023 - AI and Society 38 (1):153-171.
Organisations increasingly use automated decision-making systems (ADMS) to inform decisions that affect humans and their environment. While the use of ADMS can improve the accuracy and efficiency of decision-making processes, it is also coupled with ethical challenges. Unfortunately, the governance mechanisms currently used to oversee human decision-making often fail when applied to ADMS. In previous work, we proposed that ethics-based auditing (EBA)—that is, a structured process by which ADMS are assessed for consistency with relevant principles or norms—can (a) help organisations (...)

Understanding Conceptual Impact of Scientific Knowledge on Policy: The Role of Policymaking Conditions.Jakob Edler, Maria Karaulova & Katharine Barker - 2022 - Minerva 60 (2):209-233.
This paper presents a framework to understand the impact of scientific knowledge on the policy-making process, focusing on the conceptual impact. We note the continuing dissatisfaction with the quality and effects of science-policy interactions in both theory and practice. We critique the current literature’s emphasis on the efforts of scientists to generate policy impact, because it neglects the role of ‘user’ policymaking organisations. The framework offered in the paper develops an argument about the essential role of institutional conditions of policy (...)

History of philosophy in reverse: reading Aristotle through the lenses of scholars from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries.Sten Ebbesen, David Bloch, Jakob L. Fink, Heine Hansen & Ana María Mora-Márquez (eds.) - 2014 - [Copenhagen]: Det Kongelige Danske Videnskabernes Selskab.

How Human-Animal Relations are Realized: From Respective Realities to Merging Minds.Uta Maria Jürgens - 2017 - Ethics and the Environment 22 (2):25.
Many accounts in environmental ethics converge on relationality as the catalyst of humans' responsibility towards other-than-human beings. But what exactly is relationality and how can the amorphous notion be specified? In search of a conceptual basis for human-animal relations, I show how questions about the nature of intersubjectivity are entwined with questions about the nature of reality. In my approach to answering these questions, I connect empirical results, insights from Edmund Husserl's phenomenology and from Jakob von Uexküll's theory of (...)

Confucian heresy and religious imagination: a study of the renderings of Mozi by Protestantism missionaries in 19th century.Jiaxin Lin, Zihan Yu & Honghui Hu - 2024 - Trans/Form/Ação 47 (4):e0240044.

IN THE LAST PART of the Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smith puts his theory in a class with those of his contemporaries Francis Hutcheson and David Hume, namely, the systems that make sentiments the principle of approbation. Despite recognizing important differences with both of them, he thinks that since he has placed the origin of moral sentiments in sympathy, and in particular the fact that we are able to enter into the motives of the agent and get pleasure from (...)

The present article means to identify the reasons which have let the Indian journalists describe the bequest of Thackeray to the Indian society in terms of a legacy of fear. The article deals with Thackeray's use of fear as a tool to arise consent around his social, cultural (...)

The early modern play Sir Thomas More, written by Anthony Munday, Henry Chettle, Thomas Dekker, Thomas Heywood, and William Shakespeare, takes an ecumenical viewpoint of the play's Catholic hero in order to conform to the expectations of the Master of the Revels and to appeal to a cross-confessional audience. The playwrights carefully construct the play within the confines of censorship by centering the play's action around More's dynamic personality instead of giving a full exposition of historical plot. More's personality and (...)
